Schedule Released for 2003 STEP OUTSIDE Youth Dove Hunts

Do you know a young person who would like to be introduced to hunting? Dove hunters throughout the state have a special opportunity to introduce a young person to hunting through STEP OUTSIDE youth dove hunts sponsored by the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. In cooperation with landowners, local volunteers, businesses and organizations, these dove hunts are scheduled at 37 sites in 31 counties throughout the state. Young hunters must be less than 16 years old and accompanied by an adult at least 25 years old, with a valid state hunting license and a Harvest Information Program (H.I.P.) stamp. All are encouraged to wear eye protection and ear plugs.
Last year’s STEP OUTSIDE youth dove hunts were met with enthusiastic success. Overall, the youth dove hunts hosted 1,936 young hunters and the adults who brought them. Five hundred and fifty nine – almost 29 percent – of the youngsters were hunting for the first time. Average age of the young hunters was just under 11 years.
Pre-registration is necessary for all hunts. Consult the list of hunt dates and sites for contact information. When you pre-register you will receive directions to the field and other pertinent information. Before each hunt there will be a short welcome session with reminders of hunting safety precautions. Dove hunting will begin immediately afterwards.
